Schmidt's design for the Morgan house is based upon the facade of the Samuel Powell house in Philadelphia (1765), a building which would be canonized by the inclusion of its ballroom in the Metropolitan Museum's new American Wing in 1924. Here, in his first major commission, the architect achieved the kind of sophistication and understatement that were to become hallmarks of his style. The elegant, carved doorways inspired by American colonial precedents, careful window details and brickwork, and subtle proportional balance in both garden and street facades mark this house as one of the finest of its era in New York.
