Schmidt's first commissions were mainly remodelings of older townhouses, such as this large brownstone on the Upper East Side, one of the earliest of his buildings to be published. Modernizations such as this one were common in the development of this wealthy residential district from the turn of the century onward. Here the architect merely "classicized" the facade of a typical late nineteenth-century rowhouse, and redesigned the interior.
