This large house, built for a prominent New York attorney, shows Schmidt's gift for gracious and functional planning. Using a double-width site, Schmidt placed vestibule and service functions on the ground floor, a drawing room, library and dining room on the piano nobile, and bedrooms above. The facade is taught and severe, relying only on proportions and low relief for effect. Almost modernist in its abstract grid of window openings on a brick ground, the Cary house shows Schmidt at his most minimal. It now houses the Dalton School.
